Students Experiencing Housing Instability (McKinney-Vento)

Pioneer Elementary School District #41 is committed to ensuring that all students have equal access to a free, appropriate public education, including students who may be experiencing housing instability.

Under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, children and youth who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence may be eligible for additional educational supports.

Who May Qualify

A student may qualify for McKinney-Vento services if they are:

  • living temporarily with another family due to loss of housing or economic hardship

  • living in a motel, hotel, trailer park, or campground

  • living in a shelter or transitional housing

  • living in a car, park, public place, or other temporary setting

  • an unaccompanied youth not living with a parent or guardian

Educational Rights

Students who qualify under McKinney-Vento have the right to:

  • Immediate enrollment, even if required records are not available

  • Attend school and participate fully in all academic and extracurricular programs

  • Receive transportation assistance, when applicable

  • Receive free school meals

  • Access academic and support services comparable to those provided to all students

Enrollment and Support

Families whose housing situation changes during the school year are encouraged to contact the school. Requesting assistance or information will not affect a student’s enrollment or standing.

Dispute Resolution

If a parent, guardian, or unaccompanied youth disagrees with a decision related to eligibility, enrollment, or services, the student will remain enrolled and attending school while the dispute is resolved. Assistance with the dispute process is available through the district.
